Stafford "Gene" Eugene Polk Jr. was born in Abilene, Texas, and raised in Amarillo. He served his country during World War II on the USS New Jersey. After the war, he entered the University of New Mexico, where got a degree in geology, played football and married the coach's daughter, Sally DeGroot. He then went to work for Baroid and worked as a drilling fluids expert for the next 62 years.
He eventually settled in Farmington, where he founded the Boys and Girls Club, which is still serving the community 50 plus years later.
A service will be at 6:30 p.m. today, May 21, at Animas Valley Community Church of Aztec, 500 Sabena St. in Aztec.
In lieu of flowers, Gene's desire was that donations be made to the Animas Valley Community Church Outreach fund, 500 E. Sabena, Aztec, NM 87410. A tax deductible receipt will be issued.
