1907 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Ellen M. Garland, passed away Friday, June 20, 2014, in Farmington, after a long and productive life.
Ellen was born June 10, 1907, in Towner County, N. D. to Henry and Celesta Garst
Murphy. She grew up on a farm in North Dakota. Ellen graduated from high school in 1925 and then attended Valley City Teachers College for two years. She taught at a one room country school in 1927 and 1928 when she met George S. Garland. They married in 1928 and farmed near Carrington, N.D. until 1965 when George unexpectedly passed away. She was a lifelong member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and belonged to clubs in North Dakota, California and New Mexico. She held all the offices and attended many of the district and state meetings. The GFWC is noted for its many charitable and volunteer works. Ellen also volunteered at many other organizations including the Red Cross, Farmington Museum, San Juan College and First
United Methodist Church. Potlucks were her favorite things.
After her husband died in 1965 she turned the farm over to their son George M. Garland and moved to California. While living with her sister in Lakewood, Calif., Ellen decided to return to teaching and studied for two years at Pepperdine College, getting a Bachelor of Arts degree, and then taught in La Puente, Calif.
After 37 years of farm life she traveled extensively. She spent three months touring Europe and then attended the World's Fair in New York. She traveled the United States via automobile with her sister, visiting ancestral areas of North Dakota and Indiana then they went to Washington, D.C. They made many stops on the return trip to California. She made later trips to Japan and Hong Kong.
Upon the death of her sister in 1985, she moved to Farmington, to be near her daughter. She continued her volunteer work in Farmington.
On Oct. 13, 1995, Ellen was named "1995 Woman of the Year" by the Four Corners Conference for Women. In March of 2000, she moved to assisted living where she continued to say "Can I help you with that?" She has been in the kind care of the Life Care Center since a hip fracture in June of 2008. She was a friend of everyone and was always cheerful. She kept the family in touch by way of many, many letters and visits.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter and eight siblings. She is survived by her son, George (Rose) Garland of Carrington, N.D. and daughter Sybil (Curtis) Brown of Farmington; four grandchildren, Chris (Roger) Liebel, and Kathy Tafoya of Farmington, Paula (Dave) Loegering and Patti Opp of Fargo, N.D.;13 great-grandchildren; and l0 great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, at Cope Memorial Chapel of Farmington.
Internment and graveside service will be held later in Carrington, N. D.
