Elton L. Atcitty

Elton L. Atcitty, 38, of Shiprock, died Saturday, March 12, 2011, in Hobbs. He was born Feb. 4, 1973, in Shiprock, to Wanda and Leroy Atcitty. He was born for Todi Chíí'nii, Bitter Water; born to Kíí yaa'aaníí, Towering House.
Elton served in the U.S. Army from 1997 to 2001 as a multichannel transmission operator. He also served in the National Guard of Georgia, Kentucky and New Mexico as a radio operator and in motor transportation.
Elton served his country proudly for three tours of duty in Iraq during "Iraqi Freedom," and one year in Korea. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal/Campaign Star and many other military medals and awards.
Elton attended San Juan College's natural gas compression training program. At the time of his death, he was working for Chevron in Hobbs.
Elton loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and mountain bike; skiing, camping, hiking, baseball and collecting guns.
He served his country with great pride and honor and spoke often of his "Brothers in Arms," whom he loved deeply.
His heart was full of passion and his smile was always warm. He loved to laugh and enjoyed the fruits of his labor, "well earned." He loved his job, proud to be working in a field he loved. He was one "squared away soldier," always ready and willing to give a helping hand.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Frank Aspaas Sr., and Faye Aspaas; paternal grandparents, Kee Atcitty, Beclah chíí, Lela Atcitty, Kii yaa'aahíí; aunts, Patricia L. Aspaas and Roseanne Aspaas.
He is survived by his parents, Wanda and Leroy Atcitty of Shiprock; brother, Rick; sisters, Joell and Collett; nephews, Dawight and Xavier; aunties, Tina Alexander, Priscilla Kellywood, Karla Montoya and Julia Aspaas; uncles, Frank Aspaas, Mike Aspaas, Anthony Aspaas and Chris Aspaas Sr.; and numerous cousins.
Elton will be missed. Thank you for the smiles and happy memories, El, "Airborne All The Way."
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today, Friday, March 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2100 E. 20th St. in Farmington.
The Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Farmington.
Interment will be at Shiprock Community Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Arnold Washburn, Maylin Bernally, Keon Aspaas, Richard A. Golbe, Kevin Bennett and Kathleen Jones.
