Kenneth Edgar Gibbs, 90, long time resident of Aztec, passed away Monday March 11, 2013 at San Juan Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family.
He was one month and 5 days short of his 91st birthday.
Kenneth was born April 16, 1922 in Montrose, Colo. to Arthur Hamilton Gibbs and Frances Helen Leonard Gibbs, the eldest of 5 children.
He graduated from Montrose High School in 1940, Valedictorian of his class. He was active in sports and music, playing clarinet in the band and cello in the orchestra and was awarded a 4-year local scholarship to continue his education at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.
In 1942, at the outbreak of WWII, Ken enlisted in the US Naval Reserve, and was assigned to the V-7 Officer Training Program. As a reservist he continued with his schooling, completing 3 years at the School of Mines and was transferred by the Navy to the University of Oklahoma for his senior year where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering.
Upon graduation he was assigned to Midshipman School in New York, commissioned an Ensign in June 1944, and attached to the cruiser USS Trenton operating in the North Pacific until the end the war. He was discharged in Feb. 1946 at the rank of Lt. (jg).
Ken was employed by Superior Oil Co. as a geophysicist and chief of a seismic crew prospecting for drilling locations in Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas from 1946-1954. Upon his resignation in 1954 was supervisor of Superior's seismic crews.
He returned to his farming roots in 1954, purchasing a Grade A dairy in Montrose, Colo., which he operated with his father-in-law until they sold it in 1958.
In 1958, Ken accepted a position as plant engineer with El Paso Natural Gas Co. in Farmington where he worked until his retirement in March 1986. At retirement he was the Division Process Engineer.
On July 5, 1944 Kenneth married his high school sweetheart. Mary Louise Henderson, who survives him. He is also survived by their four children, Cynthia J. (Roger) Johnston of Orange, Calif., Jennifer E. (Rodger) Russell, of Mancos, Colo., Natalie K. (Jerry) Marx, of Aztec and Dr. Dwayne L. (Lori) Gibbs, of Farmington; 9 grandchildren, Jason (Julie) and Melissa Johnston, Joshua and Nathan (Amy) Russell, Amy Russell (Derek) Beckman, Jerad and Nicholas (Amie) Marx, Alexander Gibbs and Meridith Gibbs (Lance) Gill and six great-grandchildren, Evan Johnston, Andrew Russell, Shea, Kaeli, Keagen and Hannah Marx and a 7th (Beckman) great-grandchild is expected in August.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his brother, Warren in 2006.
He is survived by his brother, Paul Gibbs, of Montrose, Colo.; sister, Winifred (Andy) Penasa, of Montrose, Colo. and brother, Norman (Nadine) Gibbs, of Olathe, Colo.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, at the Aztec Methodist Church 123 Chaco St. Service will be casual, please wear color.
