Benjamin Johnson, 58, of Bakersfield, Calif., passed away on Saturday, Aug 3, 2013, in Bakersfield, Calif. He was born June 22, 1955, in Otis, to Woody Johnson and Etta M. Benally. He was born to Hooghanlani and born for Ashiihi.
Ben's first love was his children, then music. He lived a full life. In his teens he was a Golden Gloves boxer and a drag racer at Aztec Speedway, all while working on his dream of succeeding in the music world. Ben loved to play his guitar. His love for music lead him to his first album release with a Navajo punk rock band named, Manyhogans, well known in the 70's. In the mid-80's, he moved on with The Red Wings Band for years.
Ben was a hard worker who did everything from working in the tire, railroad, paving and masonry industry. His most recent and current band was with his sons, Let Us Make War. He was a comedian who always told great stories. His strong and caring nature always saw the bright side in dark situations. He was an amazing artist and a very good cook.
Dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and son will be missed dearly. Ben was a true living legend.
Ben was preceded in death by his father, Woody Johnson; step-father, Kee Benally; brothers, Emerson Johnson, Herman Benally and Daniel Benally; maternal grandparents, Dan and Elizabeth Padilla; and paternal grandfather, Harvey Johnson.
Ben is survived by sons, Chleve Johnson, Ryver Johnson, Axxe Johnson, all of Bakersfield, Calif.; daughters, Kristie Johnson, of Chandler, Ariz., Krissy Johnson, of Albuquerque, Kristen Johnson, of Bloomfield, Stevie Johnson-Archibeque and husband, Robert, of Dulce and Holley and Shree Johnson, of Bakersfield, Calif.; his mother, Etta M. Benally; brothers, Michael Benally, Marshall Benally Sr., Keith Benally, Ervin Johnson, Norman Johnson, Fred Johnson, Lewis Benally and Gilbert Benally; sisters, Elaine Johnson, Eleanor Castiano, Elta Frank and Elsie Padilla; and 13 grandchildren.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Brethren in Christ Mission, with Pastor Duane Bristow officiating.
Burial will follow in Brethren in Christ Mission Cemetery in Otis.
A reception will follow burial in the Brethren in Christ Mission gymnasium.
Pallbearers are Marshall Benally, Mike Benally, Keith Benally, Robert Archibeque, Carlos Rivera, Alonzo Jackson, Vincent Johnson and Emerson Johnson Jr.
