Patricia "Patty" Jean Schmitt Riecke, 82, of Farmington, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, in Farmington. She was born June 18, 1931, in Grenville to Milton and Mallie Moore.
She was raised on a farm near Des Moines and graduated from Des Moines High School in 1949. She earned numerous awards for her typing and shorthand skills. She moved to Farmington in 1950 to take the job of secretary to the Farmington High School principal. She later married Roedell Schmitt, and together they raised three daughters.
Patty worked as the school secretary at Country Club Elementary and drove a Farmington Municipal School bus for many years. She moved to El Paso, Texas, in the early 1970s, where she became the first woman to work as a computer technician for El Pas Natural Gas Company. In 1976, she was reunited with and married her high school sweetheart, Charlie Riecke, and for the next 38 years they lived in Medford, Ore., until his death in 2012. She recently moved back to Farmington to be near her family.
Patty was involved the United Methodist Women, Beta Sigma Phi sorority, playing Bunco, all kinds of sewing and crafts and cooking. She and Charlie enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting, riding their ATVs and spending time on the Oregon coast.
Patty was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Riecke, and her parents.
She is survived by her daughters, Jeanie (Tommy) Barnes of Ignacio, Colo., Patricia Rae (Charlie) Evans of Albuquerque, and Jan (Kevin) Peel of Farmington; brother, Ray C. (Jeanette) Moore of Ft. Worth, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the First United Methodist Church, 808 N. Monterey Ave. in Farmington, with the Rev. Dave Blackwell officiating.
