George Powell Obituary


 Hertford resident

George Henry Powell, 78, of 118 Pirate Landing, Hertford, died Tuesday afternoon, June 7, 2011, in his home.   Born in New Kent County, Va., he was the son of the late Joseph I. and Lillian Hazelwood Powell.  He retired after 20 years with the US Air Force as a Technical Sergeant, worked with the civil service for 15 years as a mechanic and later with Waste Industries.  Survivors include his wife, Karine Mercede Hanson Powell; four daughters, Glenda P. Doud of Atlanta, Ga., Kim Marie Tardif of Poquoson, Va., Darla Kay LaPorte of Hancock, Wis. and Laura Jean Her of Amhearst Junction, Wis.; three sons, George H. Powell Jr. of Poquoson, Henry Ervin Powell and Steven James Maddox, both of Stevens Point, Wis.; a sister, Lois Moore of Yorktown, Va.; six grandchildren, Jonathan, Michael, Al, Billy, Megan and Stephanie; and a great-grandchild, Riley.   Memorial services will be held at a later time.   In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to Bethel Baptist Church, 820 Burnt Mill Road, Hertford, NC 27944.   Online condolences may be sent to the family through www.swindellfuneralhome.com.   Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services is serving the Powell family.
