George Laughmiller Obituary


Elizabeth City resident

George Sullivan "Sonny" Laughmiller, 71, of 103 W. Hunters Trail, Elizabeth City, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013 at his home. Born in Huntsville, Ala., he was the son of the late Ollie Sullivan and Stella May Couch Laughmiller and was the husband of Norma Hinsesley Laughmiller. Following U.S. Army service and education, Sonny made his home in Norfolk, Va., for twenty-seven years where he was employed NADEP he cherished his family, church and working with his sons in sports, Cub Scouts and school activities. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, golfing, carpentry and beekeeping. Sonny loved God and people with a servant's heart and reached out to help with his many skills. In 1996 he tackled a new position at Andrews Air Force Base for eleven years after which he retired to make his new home in Elizabeth City. His recent interests included New Community Church Life, Albemarle Beekeeping Association, and Museum of the Albemarle as well as boating with family and friends on the beautiful Pasquotank River. In addition to his wife of forty-eight years, Sonny is survived by two sons, Lance Laughmiller and wife, Andrea, and Jay Laughmiller; and three grandchildren, Luke, Samuel and Sarah Kate. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lynda Pons. A graveside funeral service will take place Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at New Community Church on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013 at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening at Twiford Memorial Chapel from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to New Community Church, New Tribes Missions, 100 Kathryn Circle, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Twiford Funeral Home, Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, is assisting the Laughmiller family. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.

Dear Norma,

We are so sad to hear that Sonny has departed this world. We know you will miss him terribly, but he has gone home to be with the Lord. Someday we will all be reunited with him!

Dear Norma, we are so sad to learn of Sonny's passing. You both have been an inspiration to us, showing your love and faith through this journey. Sonny was a wonderful person in high school days and truly so in the last "50", So glad we got to see you all at the reunion. You and your family are on our hearts and in our prayers. So sorry to learn of Sonny's passing. I remember him from East Clinton School and the fun we had riding horses. Best wishes to his family.
