Geoffrey Henry Crittenden, born 12 January 1925, London, England, died 3 May 2012 Elizabeth City; slipped his moorings and passed to the Other Side, surrounded by the momentos of a lifetime in Asia.
The second of four sons, Geoffrey Crittenden was raised in Victoria, Australia. During World War II, he worked as an apprentice machinist and later a draftsman in the shipyards at Williamstown, Victoria, repairing US and Royal Australian Navy warships.
In 1959 Geoff immigrated to the United States, where he worked as a mechanical engineer in Seattle, Wash. and Oakland, Calif., on bridge and crane projects, as well as rocket gantries for NASA's Project Mercury. In 1961 Geoff began a three-decade engineering career in Asia; Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Turkey.
Geoff proudly took US citizenship at a ceremony in Fort Bragg; late in life he returned to his art. His oil paintings won several local contests and sold for a decent sum.
Geoffrey Crittenden is survived by his third wife of 10 years, Ruth Tuttle. He was married for 45 years to Lois Crittenden, née Leonard, who passed away in 2000. He is also survived by four sons and a daughter, 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
