Johnny  Lee Hughes, 70, of Tyner, died Monday, Aug. 1, at Chowan Hospital in Edenton. Mr. Hughes was born in Davidson County, a son of Hazel Byrley Hughes Smith and the late Robert Lee Hughes. An Army veteran, he retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock as a general foreman in the nuclear division.   Other than his mother, Mr. Hughes is survived by a sister, Margaret Sharon Vogtsberger and her husband, Oscar, of Hampton, Va.; a brother, Danny Craig Hughes and his wife, Cecelia, of Graham; his "boy", Jordan Herman; his special friend, Bonnie Herman; and his step-father, Ott Smith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Thomas Hughes; and a sister, Linda  Hughes Campbell.   A memorial celebration of Johnny's life will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 6, at the funeral home chapel. Friends may visit with the family immediately after the service. Condolences may be sent by visiting Evans Funerals and Cremations is serving the Hughes family.
