Gilbert (Dick) Sylvester Ballance, age 94, of Charlotte, passed away Feb. 24, 2014.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28 at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 2 p.m.- 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. today at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn West Mausoleum.
Mr. Ballance was born on July 31, 1919 in Pasquotank County. He graduated first in his high school class. After three years at UNC-Chapel Hill, he served in the Army Air Corps in Europe and Africa. Near the end of the war, he returned to North Carolina to finish his Bachelors Degree and marry May Belle Sawyer, to whom he was married for 54 years. Mr. Ballance had a long career teaching English and Broadcast Speech at Central Piedmont High School and then Garinger High School. He also attended Northwestern University where he served as Assistant Director of the college radio station, WNUR. Later he managed the Wake Forest radio station. After a 51 year teaching career, he retired in 1979. At age 92, Mr. Ballance had his first book published, "Leah's Journey", drawn on his childhood experiences of rural life in Pasquotank county.
Mr. Ballance is predeceased by his wife, May Belle; son, Don; and daughter, Elizabeth.
Surviving are daughter, Bobbie Huybrechts and husband, Luke, of Roanoke, Va.; daughter-in-law, Beth Ballance of Savannah and son-in-law, Wayne Glenn of Charlotte. Grandchildren are Heather Hedrick of Spring Hope, Nikki Hedrick of Roanoke, Va. and Jason Martin of Charlotte, Great-grandson, Jeremiah. Memorials may be made to the
