Herman Lee Sawyer, Sr., 89 of 840 Maple Grove Church Road, Dunn, died Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Sampson Regional Medical Center. Even though he was born in South Norfolk, Va., his heart belonged to the Elizabeth City area, specifically, Pasquotank where the bullfrogs jump from bank to bank. He was the son of the late Timothy Lloyd Sawyer and Lena Belle Copeland Sawyer Cain and the widower of Margaret Pipkin Sawyer. He was a retired Bridge Master with the U. S. Corps of Engineers, a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII with four Bronze Stars, and attended Maple Grove United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Beverly Sawyer Perry and husband, James, of Dunn and Susan Sawyer Lord and husband, Mark, of Huntersville; two sons, Herman Lee Sawyer Jr., and wife, Alice, and Rev. Kelly Lacy and wife, Lisa, all of Elizabeth City; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by two sisters, Louise Anderson and Katherine Stanley; and six brothers, Randall Sawyer, Samuel Sawyer, Bradley Sawyer, Vincent Sawyer, Lawrence Sawyer, and Jack Sawyer. A funeral will be Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Kelly Lacy, the Rev. Brian Sawyer, and the Rev. Katie Paul officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of the son, Herman Lee Sawyer Jr., 305 Selden Street, Elizabeth City.
