Dr. John Elliott Haynes, 75, of 1209 Preyer Avenue, Elizabeth City, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at W.R. Winslow Memorial Home. Born in Greenville, S.C., he was the son of the late Jasper Victor and Helen Gosnel Haynes and was the husband of Jane Sanders Haynes of the home. Dr. Haynes was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was also a former member of the Elizabeth City Rotary Club, the Pasquotank Camden Library Board, the Northeastern High School Booster Club, and the Elizabeth City Jaycees and was Chairman of the Elizabeth City Tree Committee. Dr. Haynes coached baseball and basketball for the Elizabeth City Boys Club and Parks and Recreation. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. After graduating from UNC in 1966 Dr. Haynes began his work as a dentist in Elizabeth City and continued his practice for forty-seven years.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Haynes is survived by three daughters, Allison Morhard and husband, Chris, of Birmingham, Ala., Rebecca Claffey and husband, Chris, of Wilmington and Suzanne Ott and husband, Michael, of Fairfax, Va.; two sons, John E. Haynes Jr. and wife, Cathy, of Nags Head and James Andrew Haynes and wife, Kassie, of Gastonia; and ten grandchildren, Olivia, Christopher, William, Mannon, Macey, Love, Millicent, Amelia, Jackson and Cooper. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Cleveland Haynes. A memorial service with military honors will take place Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph Casteel officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church and at all other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the , 930-B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834, or the SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina, P.O. Box 1772, Elizabeth City, NC 27906.
