Jean Baines Blanchard, 80, of 1855 N.C. Highway 37 South, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2010 in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va. Mrs. Blanchard was born in Gates County and was the daughter of the late John David and Mamie Story Baines. A graduate of Gatesville High School, she worked in the FBI Building in Washington, D.C., returned to Gates County and married, later worked as the secretary at the Gates County High School, and then spent most of her life as a homemaker. A member of Zion United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women, she also enjoyed membership in the Gatesville Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Nathan "Billy" Blanchard; sisters, Gladys, Lorene, and Mable; and brothers, Edgar, Dick, Pete and Bill. Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Jean Bergevin and husband, Dr. Michael A. Bergevin of Smithfield, Va., and Billie Lynn Poole and husband Mark C. Poole of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Nathan and Kimberly Cole, Richard Poole and Kristin Lane and husband Brooks; and a great-grandson, Carter Lane. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tracy Clayton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence.
