Sarah Bunn Obituary

Elizabeth City resident

Sarah Westray Bunn, 97, of Elizabeth City, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2012 at Carolina House. A native of Battleboro, she was the youngest of four children of the late James Pettigrew and Jessie Powell Speight Bunn. Sarah was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and a former member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Battleboro. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church Guild and the Museum of the Albemarle. She was a graduate of East Carolina University and later from the Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing, of which her parents urged her to attend to satisfy her desire to see the world. Sarah lived the true meaning of loyalty and service to our country; she retired after twenty-five years of decorated service as a full Army Major and was an RN as a member of the Army Nurse Corps. After retirement, she was happy to continue to commit herself to many needs of others, whether they were health, education, nutritional or housing needs. Sarah was always generous from her head to her toes and cared about humanity with her great wit, grace and humility. Her love for the outdoors and animals, especially her dogs, gently rippled out to many people. She was "Aunt Sarah" to seven nieces and nephews who survive her, James P. "Jimmy" Bunn of Elizabeth City, Richard S. "Todie" Bunn Jr. of Elizabeth City, Sarah B. "Jenny" Lamb of Raleigh, Barbara B. Brown of Kitty Hawk, Nancy S. Roberts of Durham, Mary Margaret S. Boulware of Charlotte and Sarah S. Boone of Washington, DC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. James Pettigrew Bunn and Richard S. Bunn Sr.; and a sister, Margaret Bunn Smith. A funeral service will take place Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Brent Melton officiating. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Battleboro Cemetery, Rocky Mount. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to The Museum of the Albemarle, 501 S. Water Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, Christ Episcopal Church, 202 S. McMorrine Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or the Army Medical Department Museum Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 8294, San Antonio, TX, 75239. Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, is assisting the Bunn family. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.

Sarah was one of a kind and was a great delight to be around. I remember her well, meeting her for the first time about 28 years ago. A wonderful friend to all she knew, a dedicated volunteer and generous supporter. I'm so very sorry for your loss but I am so glad I knew this wonderful woman.
