JOHN MONG Obituary

DAYTON - Greenville native John R. Mong, 88, died April 24, 2014, in Dayton.

Born to Charles L. Mong and Mary Fitzgerald Mong in March 1926. John's grandfather was former Greenville mayor and U.S. Congressman William T. Fitzgerald. John graduated from Greenville High School in 1944, then entered the U.S. Army, where he served in Europe.

After the war, he graduated from Oberlin College in 1950, then attended graduate school at Princeton University and entered the doctoral program at the Russian Institute at Columbia University.

He spent most of his career in New York City where he served as fiction editor of the Saturday Evening Post and in various editing positions at G.P. Putnam, Doubleday and Pegasus Publishing houses.

John is survived by nephews, Robert Mong, Dallas, Texas, and Charles Mong, Indianapolis; and nieces, Catherine Mong, Dayton and Martha Culp, Centerville.

The family will conduct a private memorial service. Donations may be made in John Mong's name to the Garst Museum, 205 N. Broadway, Greenville, OH 45331.
