Jerry W. Murphy

PLANT CITY, Fla. - Pastor Jerry W. Murphy, 79, of Plant City, FL, entered into eternal rest on Jan. 3, 2014.

He was born June 4, 1934, in Greenville, to Elvin and Claudia Murphy. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carolyn Major; a grandchild and a great-grandchild.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a former pastor at Springhead, Sydney and Dover Assemblies of God in Florida. He retired after 34 years of service from Union Camp Corp. of Lakeland, Fla. He loved his family and enjoyed crosswords, walking and studying the Bible.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Opal O. Murphy; children: Othelia Hall, Ronnie (Pat) Hester, Howard Murphy, Roger (Linda) Murphy, Sylvia Gregory and David J. (Nina) Murphy; siblings Mary Murphy of Fresno, Calif., Bill (Susie) Murphy of Greenville, John "Tom" (Sherry) Murphy of Mesa, Ariz., and Susie (Jim) Oswalt of Centerburg, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

A Celebration of Life was held on Jan. 7, at Hopewell Funeral Home in Plant City. Interment followed at Springhead Cemetery in Lakeland.
