CARTHAGENA - Irene M. Bender, age 78, of Carthagena, died July 1, 2014, at her home.

She was born Dec. 19, 1935, in Coldwater, to the late Leo H. and Rose (Kahlig) Wenning. On June 9, 1956, she married Edward C. Bender, and he died Aug. 31, 2000.

She is survived by seven children, Cynthia Gaerke of Coldwater, Joseph and Jean Bender of Maria Stein, Janice and Kirk Brackman of Vandalia, Marjorie and David Luthman of Versailles, Donald and Dee Dee Bender of St. Henry, Marilyn and Allen Mulholland of Spencerville and Michael and Susan Bender of St. Henry, 21 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, six stepgreat-grandchildren, brothers and sisters, Raymond and Mary Wenning of Coldwater, Vera Bruns of Winter Haven, Fla., Pete Wenning of Coldwater and Lilly Fullenkamp of Coldwater, and in-laws, Julius and Lois Bender of Minster, Christine McDonald of Celina, Ruth Bender of Ft. Loramie and Melba Bender of Ft. Loramie.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Bender, a son-in-law, David Gaerke, a sister, Dorothy and Albert Knapke, and in-laws, Wilfred Bruns, Rosemary Wenning, Wilfred Fullenkamp, Aloys and Clara Bender, Martin Bender, Albert and Bea Bender, Victor Bender, Lawrence and Ruth Bender, Louise and Charles Francis, Alvina and Clarence Cordonnier, Ann Marie and Jack Burnaby, Pauline and Melvin Schmiesing, and Don McDonald.

She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Carthagena, St. Monica's Ladies Sodality, and the Coldwater American Legion Auxiliary. Irene was a homemaker, loving mother and grandmother, enjoyed flowers, sewing, baking, and spending time with her familly.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Carthagena. Burial will follow in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home, St. Henry from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Condolences may be made at www.hogenkampfh.com.
