GREENVILLE - Alice Marie Callis Vaughn, age 96, of 750 Chestnut St., Greenville, Ohio, widow of Merle Winfred Vaughn, passed away peacefully at 6:05 a.m. on April 24, 2014, at the Brethren Retirement Community.

She was born Dec. 5, 1917, in Fort Branch, Ind., daughter of the late Richard "Curtis" and Clara (Mangrum) Callis. She married Merle on April 12, 1936, and became a widow on Aug. 17, 1948, when he died in a tractor/train accident. She lived in Ft. Branch and Princeton, Ind., most of her life, then at the Brethren Retirement Community since 2007. With the help of the Lord, Alice reared four children as a young widow, served as a kindergarten Sunday school teacher at the Princeton Church of God for 20 years, and assembled relays for Potter-Brumfield Electronics for 33 years. She will be remembered for her faith in God, for overcoming adversity, and for her humor, stories, cooking, sewing, and making irreplaceable childhood memories for her family.

Many years after Merle's death, once the children were raised, Alice began to consider life with another husband. A courtship began that developed into plans to marry, but before they could marry, her suitor died suddenly of a heart attack. She considered his daughter, Shelia Brokaw, to be another daughter from that point on, and Shelia's daughter, Julie, to be another granddaughter. Today they live in Beaumont, Calif.

In addition to Shelia and Julie, Alice Vaughn is survived by four children and their spouses, Carol and Donald "Don" Rutter, Joyce and Myrl Nisely, Donna and Douglas "Doug" Leis, all of Greenville, Ohio, and son, Larry Vaughn, of Princeton, Ind.; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Dennis and Teresa Rutter, David and Dwanna Rutter all of Greenville, Ohio, Duane and Jena Rutter of Monroe, Ohio, Eric Nisely of Greenville, Ohio, Retha and Michael "Mike" Nester of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Cynnema and Jeffrey "Jeff" Petry of Hollansburg, Ohio, Cherie and Gary Allen II of Virginia Beach, Va., Shannon and David Pomeranz of Sarasota, Fla., Michelle and Terry French, and Melissa and Kevin Steiner all of O'Fallon, Mo.; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and Richard "Dick" Mason, of Princeton, Ind.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
