Piper, Joel Alexander - West Frankfort  
Joel Alexander Piper of West Frankfort passed away April 30, 2015, at Saint Louis University Hospital. Joel was born Sunday, August 23, 1970, in Belleville to Michael Kent and Mary Ann (Stewart) Piper. He graduated from Mount Vernon Township High School in 1989 and attended John A. Logan College and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was employed by Westside Care Center in West Frankfort for seventeen years. Joel was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in West Frankfort. He was an active member of the West Frankfort Moose's Club and the Knights of Columbus. Joel was also an avid fan of both the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Blues. He was preceded in death by his parents, his maternal grandparents C.E. and Mary (Rutherford) Stewart and his paternal grandparents Mack and Lucille (Burnett) Piper. He is survived by Cindy Morthland of West Frankfort, daughter Hannah of Herrin, brother Mike and wife Kelly of Chesapeake, Virginia; brother Scott of Flower Mound, Texas; nieces Katie Saylor (Adam) of Edmond, Oklahoma; Haley of Norman, Oklahoma; Taylor of Charlottesville, Virginia; Caroline and Tori of Chesapeake, Virginia; sister-in-law Mary Beth Piper of Flower Mound, Texas; and best friend Michael Federeci of Mt. Vernon. Funeral services will be held at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 from 5-7 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Eusebius Mbidoaka officiating. A memorial service to follow at 7:00 p.m. His remains will be interred at Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Herrin Hospital and St. Louis University Hospital, as well as Dr. Dennon Davis, Tina Melvin, and the staff at Logan Primary Care.
