Dr. Fred Whitlatch, 61, of West Frankfort, Illinois passed away at 3:45 a.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013 at his residence.

He was born April 15, 1952 in Tower Hill, Illinois to Lester and Ilene (McDonald) Whitlatch.
Fred graduated from Eastern Illinois University with an education degree in 1974. He taught high school biology and coached multiple sports in Girard, Illinois, from 1975-79. In the fall of 2012, he returned to teaching biology at Morthland College. Fred graduated from the University of Illinois Dental School, Chicago, in 1982. He was a dentist in West Frankfort for 31 years. Dr. Whitlatch volunteered his services for the annual ""Give Kids a Smile"" campaign as well as other charitable opportunities around the state of Illinois. Dr. Whitlatch was a member and president of the S.I. Dental Society.
He also was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he sang bass in the choir and he played acoustic guitar and often led the praise team. ""He was actively involved with the Walk to Emmaus community where he served as the Community Lay Director and led in various leadership capacities on many weekend retreats from 1966 until 2012.
He also was a member of the Lion's Club in West Frankfort.
Survivors include his wife, Debby Whitlatch of West Frankfort; parents, Lester and Ilene Whitlatch of Tower Hill, Illinois; son, Jeff Whitlatch of West Frankfort; two daughters: Elise (Barnabas) Omulokoli of Charleston, IL; Corinne Whitlatch of O'Fallon, IL; two brothers: George (Kathy) Whitlatch of Mackinaw, IL; Dale (Karyn) Whitlatch of Breese, IL; two sisters: Lois (Lynn) Laughlin of Lincoln, IL; Lynne (Blair) Wagner of Holton, KS.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Methodist Church in West Frankfort, Illinois at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2013.
Arrangements are being handled by Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to Morthland College Scholarship fund in memory of Fred. Envelopes will be available and accepted at the funeral home or at the church before the service.
