Georgia Griffin, 100, of West Frankfort died at 9:40 a.m. Monday, February 3, 2014 at home. She was born September 13, 1913, in Benton, Illinois, the daughter of George and Chloe Sniderwin. Georgia married John Edward "Eddie" Griffin on July 21, 1934 and they enjoyed 67 years together until they were parted by his death on June 2, 2002. Born from this union were five sons, George Edward, Donald Lee, Richard Lee "Dick", Jon Edward and William Kenneth and two daughters, Marilou and Georgianne.

Survivors include her sons, Dr. Donald Lee Griffin and wife Vicki; The Rev. Jon E. Griffin and wife Sally; William Kenneth "Ken" Griffin and daughters, Marilou Proffitt and husband Benny and Georgianne Graskewicz and husband Don; 12 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; brother, Frank Sniderwin; sister Theresa Large; other relatives and countless friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Eddie; infant sister, Allie; infant son, George Edward; son, Richard Lee "Dick"; brother, Kirby Sniderwin and sisters, Roberta Gower and Vondelee Schmisseur and grandson, Christopher Griffin.

Georgia graduated from Benton Community High School and Southern Illinois Normal University. She began her teaching career in Akin, Illinois in 1933, taught over 40 years and retired from the West Frankfort city schools. Georgia continued to substitute teach after retirement and also taught homebound students. She was a faithful member of the Second Baptist Church and taught the Alathean I Sunday School class; Franklin County Retired Teachers Association and other civic organizations.

Georgia will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her. Her smile now brightens the eternities.

Services will be at 12 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2014 at Second Baptist Church in West Frankfort with Rev. Dr. Brett Beasley presiding. Visitation will be prior to the services beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Tower Heights Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Second Baptist Church or the West Frankfort Historical Society.
