Thomas Ervin Mandrell, 66, of Zeigler, Illinois formerly of West Frankfort, Illinois passed away at 3:14 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2012 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He was born December 14, 1945 in West Frankfort to Robert and Mary (Threewitt) Mandrell.

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather; retired police officer from the city of West Frankfort; received Medal of Valor from WFPD for saving a drowning boy at the city park pond; served as a police detective for WFPD from 1978- 1998; On February 14, 1988, Tom was honored for many things during his career while going above and beyond the call of duty; veteran of US Air Force as a 357 TAC FTR SQ; Pentecostal faith having been brought up in Glad Tidings Church in West Frankfort; member of Elks, VFW in West Frankfort, Moose, American Legion in Orient; The family honored Tom's wishes to be an organ donor.
Thomas was preceded in death by: Parents; Aunt, Betty Threewitt Hampton; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Troy and Flora Doty.
Survivors include his Wife, Debra (Doty) Mandrell of West Frankfort whom he shared 22 wonderful years with; Two sons: Justin Lipsey and Shaun Ervin Mandrell both of West Frankfort; Three daughters: Danielle Elizabeth Mandrell of West Frankfort, Leslie Ann (Pete) Wilce of West Frankfort, Tonya Renee (Sam) Mocaby of Marion; Grandchildren: Daryn Thomas Morris of West Frankfort, PVT2 Aaron J. Pogue of Hohenfels Bayern, Germany, Kaci L. Pogue of Marion; Three brothers: Ed Mandrell of West Frankfort, Kenneth Mandrell of Herrin, Robert Mandrell of Sumner, Illinois; Aunts and Uncles: Carlos Harper of West Frankfort, Thomas (Elouise) Threewitt of DuQuoin; Special nephew, Thomas Edward Mandrell of West Frankfort; Several others nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort, Illinois with Rev. Eugene Sloan officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Tower Heights Cemetery in West Frankfort, Illinois.
Military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 1961 of Orient, Zeigler Post 177, VFW Post 5764 of West Frankfort, and Marion National Honor Guard.
