In Loving Memory of
Flavio F.
Bisignano, Ph.D.
Flavio, the son of Salvatore and Sadie Bisignano, was born February 13, 1927 in Providence, Rhode Island and peacefully passed away in his home on Friday, August 15, 2014 with family by his side in Rolling Hills, California, where he lived most of his life.
As a junior in high school during WWII, Flavio joined the Army to fight for his country, but since the war soon ended, after graduating in 1945, he re-enlisted in the Navy where he served on two Navy vessels before ending his tour of duty in San Pedro. Following in his father's footsteps, Flavio obtained his cosmetology license and within a few years enjoyed success as a "stylist to the stars." The author of 8 cosmetology books, Flavio was known as an innovator, and in addition to his award winning creations, he opened several salons throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. Returning to school and obtaining his teaching credentials, Flavio opened the first and largest privately owned cosmetology school in the Nation. Flavio Torrance Beauty College has been a landmark in the community for almost 60 years was the first of 12 schools training over 100,000 students. Throughout his lifetime he passionately supported the military, and volunteered with the Merchant Marines on 3 separate fact finding missions in Viet Nam. His book and film, Viet Nam, Why? is a journal of his travels as a credentialed reporter and photographer in the rank of Major during one of the most controversial military periods in United States history. Flavio was also a marathon runner, with over 150 marathons including the Boston Marathon, New York Marathon and was a Legacy Runner in the LA Marathon, running every LA Marathon for 26 years straight. Some of his other endeavors include restaurateur and Real Estate Broker.
Flavio is survived by Carrie, his loving wife of 60 years; his five devoted children, Gerard (Angela) Bisignano, Jeannine Bisignano Madsen, Terese Bisignano, Dana Bisignano and Tiana Bisignano (Derek) Capper; his five beautiful grandchildren, Christian Madsen, Jonathan Bisignano, Max Madsen, David Bisignano and Dylan Capper, many other relatives and friends. The Funeral Mass for Mr. Bisignano will be held on Wednesday, August 27th at 11:00 A.M. at St. John Fisher Catholic Church in Rancho Palos Verdes. The interment will be private. He was one of my dad's close friends. They ran together for over 40 years, and as they hit their 70s, they walked together. I always enjoyed walking with them and listening to their stories. Flavio's sense of humor and memories of him bantering with my dad is something I will always treasure. They had a core of running friends that ran together since the 1960s. Many have passed now, but I hold fond memories of the many Sunday Brunches held out our house. The house would be full of laughter and boisterous men, all tucking into a huge breakfast buffet that my mom cooked. Most, I don't think I ever knew the names of. But Flavio was one of the few that I did know and will always remember.

I was a student in 1987, and have fond memories of the school having intensely structured classes, both in practice and theory.
I recall one teacher by the name of Ken Kennon, whom I looked up to for educational skills. I just wanted to extend my very belated condolences on Dr. Flavio’s passing, which I learned of today after watching the episode with Tabatha at the school.
I enjoyed a long career as a Cosmetologist, thanks to the rigorous education I received at Flavio’s so long ago.

Dearest Tiana and family,
May you always know how much your father loved his family.. A truer friend, or more resilient individual I have never known. He met each day with the spirit of a warrior and a heart filled with laughter and wonder. Rest in Peace, dear Flavio.

Jesus said to his disciples, " In My Father's house there are many mansions, I go to prepare a place for you, if it were not so I would have told you". Your Dad Flavio has an eternal home. His spirit is alive & well & I'm pretty sure God has given your Dad a desk in a beautiful salon with his beloved dog & probably a few others! Flavio is an incredibly talented gracious gentleman, his spirit was touched by so many on this earth as he will touch so many as well in heaven. Your Dad's spirit, his energy will still surround y'all. You will feel him with you, for he will forever be in your heart & spirit as well. I pray for y'all comfort, strength & the endurance your Dad had as he ran many 10k's! What a guy! With Much Love to each of you & your Mother Carrie, Terri

Remember
Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
