Aidan Neilan Obituary

Aidan Joseph Neilan, M.D.
1923 - 2013
Aidan Joseph Neilan, M.D., a 54 year resident of Palos Verdes, died peacefully on June 2, 2013. He was 89 years old. Dr. Neilan was born in Galway, Ireland, and grew up in Eyre Square, the heart of Galway city. He received his medical degree on academic scholarship at the National University of Ireland Galway in 1948, and he practiced medicine at Trent-on-Stoke in the north of England, at New Rochelle General Hospital in New York, and in the metropolitan Chicago area. He became a Captain in the U.S. Army and thereby an immediate citizen of the US. He was posted in Orleans, France, in the Loire Valley for two years. In 1956, he opened a private practice in Lawndale where he practiced general medicine including pediatrics, obstetrics, surgery and primary care. In 1970, at the age of 46, he resumed medical training as a Resident in Radiology at the Wadsworth VA Medical Center in Los Angeles, and subsequently joined the staff of the VA where he was Chief of Orthopedic Radiology and where he founded the mammography program. Through his teaching responsibilities at the VA he was a Clinical Professor of Radiology at UCLA. Dr. Neilan was a lifelong scholar, and had interest in history, psychology, religion, and especially biomedical science. Movies were a passion ever since their magic captured him as a boy in Galway where he paid 4 pence at the Savoy Cinema. He loved swimming in the ocean, and maintained a rigorous exercise program throughout his life. He is survived by his wife Nuala, his daughters Katherine Neilan of San Francisco, Rosemary Neilan and grandson Matthew Neilan of San Francisco, and son David Neilan of Rancho Palos Verdes. The funeral Mass will be celebrated by Msgr. Jarlath Cunnane at St. John Fisher Church on Monday June 10, 2013, followed by a reception at the Neilan Family Home. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor in San Pedro.
