Long time Hawthorne first grade teacher, Mrs. Emily Wolverton, passes on at 104.
For many years Mrs. Wolverton had room number 1 at the Eucalyptus Street School in Hawthorne. She once calculated over 1200 students spent time in her classroom and she was devoted to giving them the best start possible. Born in Stanton, Nebraska she graduated from Stanton High School and taught in one room schools near the family farm for 10 years before moving to Long Beach, California and attending UCLA
. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology in 1943 and started in the Hawthorne School District around 1944. After retiring in 1973 she lived in Oregon and Nebraska before spending the last 25 years at Hillcrest in La Verne, California where she was a cherished resident and given tremendous, attentive care when she finally needed it.
A long time resident of Hawthorne, California; she was preceded in death, in 1986, by her husband of 42 years, Harold B. Wolverton, who was employed for 25 years by the L.A. Sheriff's Department at Biscailuz Center. She is survived by two sons, Richard Wolverton of Winthrop, Massachusetts and Harold D. Wolverton of Claremont, California; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; plus a huge number of nieces, nephews and friends in California, Oregon, Nebraska, Kansas and other varied places.
