Florence Ione Rice

Ione Rice, mother, grandmother and great grandmother died peacefully on her own terms at age 103 and 11 months on July, 27 2013 at 10:30 am at Torrance Memorial Medical Center.
She was born August 23rd, 1909 in Los Angeles and has been a resident of Torrance for the last 30 years. In 1942 she married Vern James Rice, who was principal of Leuzinger High School. She taught high school for 38 years, retiring from Inglewood High School in 1973. She leaves behind two sons, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Vern Rice died in 1972.
Since discovering Earthwatch Expeditions in 1982 at the age of 72 she participated as a volunteer in 42 of the organizations scientific research projects on biology, archeology and paleontology, traveling to all parts of the world. She completed her last expedition at age 87.
Ione's full life was defined by her passion for adventure, travel, learning, teaching, photography and donating her time to research projects. For her 100th birthday she bought a beagle puppy, Foxy with which she enjoyed greatly in her final years.
She was an inspiration to all who knew her.
