Joan Nelson Lee

Joan Nelson Lee, a former teacher at Chadwick School, and the widow of P.G. Lee, (Chadwick Class of 1943, and long-time Chadwick teacher and administrator), died peacefully at her home in Palos Verdes on Saturday, October 27, 2012 with her family by her side. Joan and P.G. met in high school because their fathers were classmates at the U.S. Naval Academy and they attended alumni events with their parents. Their fathers were even on the wrestling team together. P.G. Lee was the nephew of Chadwick School founder Margaret Lee Chadwick. After Joan and P.G. were married in 1948, they lived and worked in Schenectady, NY, New York City, Rhinelander, WI, Dallas and Chicago. In 1956, they came to Chadwick School to teach. Joan taught girls' physical education and coached the girls' sports teams from 1956-1960. P.G. taught history, coached for many years, was Dean of Faculty, Chair of the History Department, and served one year as co-head of school. He also served on the Board of Trustees. Their children, Merrie '67 and Don '70 grew up on the Chadwick campus. P.G. retired in 1987 and died in 1988. A Memorial Service for Joan Lee will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, 26825 Rolling Hills Road, Rolling Hills Estates, CA 90274. Following the service a reception will be held at The Canterbury Retirement Community at 5801 Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275. Joan is survived by her children, Merrie and Don. Other family members include Merrie's husband, Bill Gottlieb; their daughters, Anna and Isabel of New York City; Don's wife, Pam Baldwin of Seattle; and their daughters, Christa of San Jose and Jenna of Bellingham, WA. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be directed in memory of Joan and P.G. Lee to Chadwick School at 26800 S. Academy Dr., Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA.
