John Sima

John Joseph Sima
John Sima, loving husband, father, Nono, brother, and uncle passed away on February 8, 2013 at home, surrounded by family. He was born in San Pedro on February 11, 1925 to Teresa and Carlo Sima and was a lifelong resident of San Pedro. He married Marian Mannino on November 3, 1946 and together they raised five children. John spent his life at sea as a commercial fisherman and skipper of the Santa Teresa and was an active member of the Fishermen's Co-op. He was a true Renaissance man, as he loved to sing, play piano, draw, paint and even created an exact replica of his purse seiner fishing boat. This artistic side was evident by the many trophies he won for decorating his boat for The Fishermen's Fiesta. His favorite day of the year was Christmas Eve when his entire family gathered to admire his awesome Christmas light display, feast on a traditional Italian fish dinner, and sing Christmas carols. Above all, John's greatest joy was his family. He and Marian spent countless hours volunteering at Mary Star of the Sea School and Fermin Lasuen High School while their children attended. And even more, he LOVED being a Nono! He was a tireless participant in his grandchildren's graduations, baseball games, softball games, soccer matches, gymnastic meets, piano recitals, school plays, and weddings. John is preceded in death by his brothers, Tony and Mario Zangaro and his granddaughter, Jayne Sima. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marian, children Carlo (Karen) Sima, Teresa Griffen, Jovan (Mike) Trapani, Ginny Sima, and John (Diane) Sima; 24 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; sister, Amelia Riera, niece Monica Turner, sisters-in-law Rose Taylor and Mary McMillan, and many nieces and nephews. Viewing and Funeral Mass in celebration of John's life will be offered at Mary Star of the Sea Church at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 14, 2013 followed by interment at Green Hills Memorial Park.
