Louise O'Flaherty

Louise O'Flaherty
September 27, 1920 - December 12, 2012
Louise O'Flaherty, daughter of Carl and Helen Wilde, sister of Barbara Dean (John), wife of Joseph S. O'Flaherty, and mother of Hon. Joseph W. O'Flaherty (Janet), Michael A. O'Flaherty, Esq. (Tina), and Mary O. Horn, M.D. (Darwin) passed away on December 12, 2012. She is survived by her son Joseph, her ten adoring grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Louise had a happy childhood in Indiana, and later graduated from Wellesley College in 1942 with degrees in English and German. Immediately following graduation, she became one of the first women in the U.S. Navy as a member of the WAVES who decoded German submarine messages during WWII. After happily marrying Joseph in 1944 and raising three children in Rolling Hills, CA, Louise wrote and published eight historical fiction and gothic novels. Meanwhile, she delighted in visiting Catalina Island with her family and traveling around the world. In her sunset years, Louise enjoyed the companionship of Gus Faust and the vibrant community at the Canterbury. She was greatly loved by her family, her friends, and her charitable causes. She will be missed and admired by all who knew her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Louise O'Flaherty at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in San Pedro on Monday, Dec. 17 at 9:30am. The Rosary will be held prior to the mass at 9:00am. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to ALS research (a cause dear to Louise's heart) through the Christopher Wells Hobler Lab for ALS Research: https://hopecenter.wustl.edu/?page_id=2687. Please sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com and dailybreeze.com.
