Lucy Ann Sydnor Easley

Lucy Ann Sydnor Easley (known as Ann to her friends) went to the House of the Lord on Monday, December 31, 2012, at age 89. She was born in Jefferson City, Tennessee on December 26, 1923 to Dr. Elmer W. Sydnor, longtime chairman of the English Department of Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, and Lucy Leake Sydnor. She graduated from Carson-Newman College in 1945 where she was the May Queen in 1944. With money saved from working at the Tennessee Valley Authority she moved to New York where she met Capt. Preston Easley who was teaching at West Point. He was a June 1943 graduate of West Point and served in WWII as a P-51 fighter pilot based in England. Ann was teaching at the college of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, New Jersey and getting her Master of Arts in Education at NYU. They were married in 1951 by groom's father, the Rev. John Burnett Easley of Chatham, Virginia. Immediately following the birth of her first child, Preston Jr. in 1952, Ann joined her husband at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany where he was the operations officer at the 10th Reconnaissance Tactical Squadron. Son Paige was born in Germany in 1954. Daughter Ann was born in 1956 while Preston was getting his MBA at Syracuse University. Preston, a career Air Force officer, commanded two RB-66 bomber squadrons at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina where Ann served as a gracious hostess for the squadron wives. The family moved to Los Angeles in 1960 with the Air Force and settled in San Pedro. Ann taught school at Western Ave. Baptist Elementary School for 20 years. Husband, Preston retired from the Air Force in 1963. He had a second career at Northrop where he worked until retirement. Preston passed away on April 7, 2004. Ann is survived by sons, Preston (Patricia) Easley, Jr.; Paige (Macrina) Easley; daughter, Ann W. Easley; grandsons, Preston S. Easley and Benjamin (Catherine) Easley; granddaughters, Paige (Jake) Kapp, Laureana Easley and Leila Easley; and great granddaughters, Cecilia Kapp and Zora Easley. There will be a Memorial Service at First Presbyterian Church, 731 S. Averill Ave., San Pedro, California at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 26, 2013. Interment will be at the Chatham Burial Park in Chatham, Virginia on February 2nd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SmileTrain, Ann's favorite charity.
