Mary Henkel Obituary

Mary Lou Henkel
Mary Lou Henkel died at her home in Harbor City on July 20, 2014 at the age of 85. She was born on November 11, 1928 in Albany, NY to Mary Kuczynska Henkel and Louis B. Henkel. She was a graduate of Albany State Teachers College, where she majored in mathematics. She was then employed at Bell Labs in Buffalo, NY, where she began her training as a computer programmer. She moved to Southern California in the late 1950s to work as a programmer in the defense industry. She retired from the Los Angeles Community College system. Mary Lou was a rare example of a woman in the field of computer programming at that time. Mary Lou was devoted to her mother, who lived with her for many years, and her aunt, Lucy K. Theodore. She was an accomplished pianist and loved cats. She is dearly missed by her cousins Anthony J. Theodore of Madison, WI; Eunice T. Cox of Georgetown, ME; and Katherine L. Theodore of Saco, ME.; and her good friends and caregivers Jaime and Julieta Casaul. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 25 from 11-12 a.m. at Rice Mortuary with a graveside service to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park.
