Mildred Cowell

Mildred Ora Cowell
Mildred Ora Cowell passed away on Friday, December 14, 2012 after a lifetime filled with laughter, happiness, children, and love. Born on June 17, 1917, in Drumright, Oklahoma to the late Charles and Grace Grubbs, she grew up in Drumright with both of her parents and with her 3 brothers and 3 sisters. She met her late husband Ken Cowell in 1936 and they were married in 1937. Their daughter, Elnora was born soon thereafter and the three of them relocated to Southern California in 1941. She became known as "Granny" (and Ken was known as "Gramps") after the arrival of her first grandchild, and she was affectionately known by that name to the scores of people that she came to know in her 71 years in Southern California. When she wasn't working around the house, or tending to her prized roses, Granny would often be found in her back yard working on her tan. She would never miss an episode of Days of Our Lives, and was quite fond of General Hospital as well. Whether it was one of the numerous birthday parties, a wedding, or the various BBQ's, Granny was a fixture; laughing and playing with everybody. Everyone knew that she could be counted on every Thanksgiving and Christmas to produce her renowned (and so delicious!) Banana Pudding. Three generations of grateful children grew up with Granny. She cooked for them, she sewed for them, she bathed them, she entertained them, she advised them, she disciplined them, and she spoiled them. Above all, she loved them. Each and every one. Granny is survived by her daughter, Elnora Swain-Thompson of Torrance, CA; her five grandsons, eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. A celebration of Granny's life will be held at White and Day Colonial Mortuary on Sunday, December 23, 2012 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm. The Service will begin at 3:30 pm. A Graveside service and burial will be at Inglewood Park Cemetery on Monday, December 24, 2012 at 10:00 am. Go to send the family messages, share memories and obtain directions to the service.
