Muriel Downey

Muriel Young Downey
Muriel Young Downey passed away Friday, April 12, 2013 with her family at her side. She had been toasted by family and friends at a family party just last December for reaching her 90th birthday. Muriel was born on December 6, 1922 in Scotland, the first daughter of Andrew and Jesse Young. She is survived by her two sons, Craig and his wife Julie of Rancho Palos Verdes and Chris and his wife Laurie of Dana Point. Muriel also leaves four grandchildren: Bradley Downey of Santa Barbara, Kristina Downey of Oakland, Ryan Downey of Dana Point, Kipp Batley of Rolling Hills Estates, and a great grandson, Kale Batley, also of Rolling Hills Estates. Muriel came to the United States as an infant in 1923, and was raised in Southern California with her sister Elizabeth. She was a proud graduate of UCLA and married her husband of over 50 years, Shelton, in 1950. Muriel and Shelton moved to the Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1955 and there raised their two boys. Muriel was a lifelong swimmer, tennis, golf and bridge player and pursued those interests with friends, family and groups on the peninsula for decades. She played tennis over the years with her children, grandchildren and her brother-in-law John Peetz of Northridge. Shelton passed away in 2005. Muriel inherited her mother's gift and love of needlework, and passed on her gift and love of cooking to her sons, though they will miss some of her specialties. Muriel enjoyed travel with husband and family. Family remembrances include our earliest trips to La Jolla with the Peetz clan in the 1950's, and a most recent adventure back to Scotland with her daughter-in-law Julie.
A private service is planned in May for her sons, their families and the families of her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and John Peetz. Go to www.lafuneral.com to send the family messages and share memories. Sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com.
