Slavko Kostich(1923 - 2013)

Slavko "Sam" Kostich
Was born in Ripon, CA on July 23, 1931, and passed away surrounded by loved ones in Roseville, CA on June 29, 2013. He is survived by his daughter, Marybeth Pierce; son-in-law Roy Pierce; son, Sam Kostich; daughter-in-law, Cathy Kostich; son, Michael Stamm; and grandchildren, Kirsten Kakarigi, Kindra Moreno, Cole Pierce, Danielle Riele, Felicia Icabalceta, and Taylor Getty. Sam is now resting peacefully with his wife, Marie Kostich; eldest son, John Kostich; and older sister, Sally Polovina. Sam and his twin brother, Bronko "Bill" were welcomed into this world by their parents, Jovan and Mila Kostich, as well as older sister Slavka "Sally." Sam spent his early childhood in the Northern California town of Jackson. In 1943, the family moved to San Pedro, CA, where Sam attended Dana Junior High School and San Pedro High School. For their senior year, Sam and his brother Bill moved back to Jackson and lived with extended family. The boys graduated from Jackson High School in 1949. He then attended the College of Pacific (UOP) on a football scholarship. His first son, Michael was born in 1952. Shortly after Michael was born, Sam was drafted by the Army and was sent into the Korean War, where he served for two years, becoming a Staff Sergeant. After returning from duty, Sam settled back in San Pedro, CA, and began working on the docks as a Longshoreman. Soon after, he met his future wife Marie Ursich. They were married in September of 1955 and went on to have three children; John, Marybeth, and Sam. In 1966, Sam moved his family up to Sacramento where he opened up the second Taco Bell in Northern California. After raising their kids, Sam and Marie sold their Taco Bell and moved to Jackson. There, they built a home and Sam worked at the County Assessor's office until his retirement in 1996. Throughout his life, Sam was passionate about his love for the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church in Jackson. He had been an active board member with the church, continuously serving in many positions since 1967. Always a kind, fun-loving, and generous man, Sam will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and his church parish. Friends and family are invited to attend a prayer service on Friday July 5th at 7pm at Daneri Mortuary (415 Broadway, Jackson, CA). A funeral service will be held on Saturday July 6th at 11am at St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church (724 N. Main St., Jackson, CA).
