Robert A. Gibson, a long-time resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, passed away peacefully in his home on May 19, 2014. Born on November 14, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio, Robert attended Warren Street Elementary School, Robinson Junior High School and graduated from Jessup W. Scott High School, all in Toledo.
Robert served in the United States Army from March 20, 1951, until March 5, 1953, during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Augsburg and Neu Ulm, Germany, where he was attached to the 27th Army Postal Unit, Adjutant General Branch of the Seventh Army. He was discharged as a Private First Class and was awarded the German Occupation Medal.
After returning from military service, Robert attended and graduated from the University of Toledo in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was recruited for employment as an Associate Engineer by Northrop Aircraft Company located in Hawthorne, California. After five and a half years with Northrop, he went to work for Hughes Aircraft Company, located in Culver City, CA, where he was employed for twenty-four years. At retirement in 1986, he was a Project Manager in the Space and Strategic Engineering Division of the Electro-Optical and Data Systems Group of Hughes Aircraft located in El Segundo, CA.
Robert was married to Nancy Claire Brigham on April 18, 1953. Nancy, also a graduate of the University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy, worked at various hospitals in Los Angeles County of which twenty years were spent at San Pedro-Peninsula Hospital in San Pedro, CA. Nancy preceded Robert in death on November 25, 1998.
In his community, Robert was active in Boy Scouts where he served as a Webelo Leader, Scout Troop Committeeman and Scoutmaster. He served as a member and chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee for the City of Rancho Palos Verdes from 1976 to 1983. He was also a long-time member of the congregation of Ascension Lutheran Church in Rancho Palos Verdes, where in 1997, he and Nancy were presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award for their many years of service.
Robert is survived by his two sons and their wives, Joel B. and Lynn Gibson of Sacramento, CA and John R. and Ann Gibson of Napa, CA, his only grandchild, Sarah A. Gibson of Napa, CA, and his dear friend Audrey Jacobson of Redondo Beach, CA.
A Memorial Service will be held at Ascension Lutheran Church at 26231 Silver Spur Road in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275, on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 1:00 pm. The family requests in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Robert's name to Ascension Lutheran Church or Providence TrinityCare Hospice Foundation in Torrance, CA.
