William A. "Bill" Steinmetz, Businessman, Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist, passed away peacefully at Little Company of Mary Hospital, Torrance. Bill served in the Army Air Corps in World War II as a flight instructor, and then attended UCLA on the GI Bill. Bill worked first as a salesman for Ducommun Metals, and then as an independent sales representative in the aircraft metals industry. He started his own business, WASSCO, which distributed hand tools to the electronics and airframe industry. In the 60's, he joined Tiernay Metals, a distributor of hard alloy aircraft extrusions, as a sales executive, then later, President and CEO. During his 38-year career with Tiernay Metals, the business grew and flourished. He was very proud of working with the best people in the metals industry. In 1999, he sold the business and set up a philanthropic foundation, where, with his family, he worked to encourage literacy and the love of learning in Southern California schoolchildren. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing in Alaska, and cheering on his beloved Bruins at sporting events. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 63 years Mary Lou, his children, Ann Steinmetz, Charlie Steinmetz and Jeanie Kay, eight loving grandchildren, and his wonderful nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to UCLA Foundation, Fund #5002, UCLA Library 11334 Charles E. Young Research Library, Box 951575, LA, CA 90095-1575.
