Anna Bachman-Barton, also known as Anne Bachman, passed away on Thanksgiving morning, 2012. She was 95. Anna grew up in Reading, Pa, with 5 siblings., a daughter of Polish immigrants. She excelled in sports, especially swimming, softball, and tennis. She also loved music. In the Depression, she worked at the Berkshire Mills for .25 an hour, saving for college. She graduated Suma Cum Laude from East Stroudsburg College in 1942, majoring in health and physical education. Later she earned an M.S. at U.C.L.A. Anne served as a 1st Lieut. in the WAC during WWII. She was a Special Services Officer at Camp Richie, Md., the Intelligence Training Center. She married Clyde Bachman, an officer from the Army Air Corps. Daughters Carol and Gerri were born in Pa. In the summer of 1949, Anna and Clyde moved to Chicago. Anna was offered a contract to pitch softball for the Admiral Music Maids, a professional team. She loved the competition. But, winter was brutal in Chicago. They continued west to California, settling first in Long Beach where Anna taught first grade, then Westchester, and finally building their own ocean view home on the sand dunes of Playa del Rey. Two more daughters, Wynnie and Jill, were born. Anna taught physical education for 23 years, 17 at Hawthorne High School. In 1966, she traveled to Hawaii and the South Pacific. She fell in love with island life. In 1969, Anna became a widow and her home was purchased for expansion of the L.A. Airport. She raised two young girls by herself in Fountain Valley. When Anna retired from teaching, she moved to her beloved Hawaii, playing tennis, walking the beaches, and swimming daily in the warm ocean. Anna married George Barton, with her same interests in the outdoor island life. They had 14 years together. In 1998, George's ashes were carried through the waves by outrigger canoe. Anna remained in Hawaii until failing health caused by a fall forced her to return to California at age 93. Anna leaves behind 4 daughters: Carol Kern (Dennis) of Lomita, Gerri Ellis of Las Vegas, Wynnie Primas (Mark) of Laguna Niguel, and Jill Bachman of San Marcos. Seven grandchildren miss their "Gran". From the Kern family are Kelsey, Damon, Kyle, Arielle, and Elia, and from the Ellis family are Joleen and Duane. There are 6 great-grandchildren. The memorial is private.
