Burkes G. Greene

Born December 28, 1921, World War II Navy veteran, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather, died April 28, 2012. He was born in Albany, Georgia and entered the Navy after graduating with honors from high school. He entered the Navy in the steward ranks due to racial segregation in the military at that time. He rose to the rank of Chief Steward and after the Navy eliminated racial segregation became a radioman and achieved the rank of Chief in that speciality as well. After his retirement from the Navy after 21 years of service, he was a postal clerk in the San Pedro Post Office. He also earned a bachelor's degree in History from California State University Long Beach and earned additional credits towards a master's degree. He was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in San Pedro and Trinity Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Throughout his life, he was an avid reader of fiction and nonfiction, a movie buff, a determined Laker supporter, and a lifelong Brooklyn then LA Dodgers fan. Predeceased by his son, Burkes G. Greene Jr. and his two sisters, and brother, he leaves to celebrate his life his wife and companion of over sixty years, Mariette D. Greene; his daughters, Linda Greene and Jameelah (Joyce) Greene; his sons, Harold Greene and Michael Greene; grandsons, Maile Greene, Marcus Greene, Omari Listenbee, and Naeem Majied; great grand children, Clarity Listenbee and Emery Listenbee, and Sol Majied and Amaiah Majied. Visitation will take place at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes. on Thursday, May 3 from 3-8 pm, and services will be held at Mt Sinai Baptist Church on Friday, May 4 at 10:30 AM.
