Burton Reagan Obituary

Burton R. Reagan (Bud) went to be with the Lord on September 7, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Joan Cronin Reagan; his son, Sean R. Reagan; daughter-in-law, Trisha Reagan; and five grandchildren, Michael, Liam, Connor, Adian and Evelyn. Bud was born in Inglewood, California in 1934. He played professional baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates and was then drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952-1953. After serving his country, Bud came home and attended Cal State Long Beach where he earned his BA and MA in physical education and was a Cum Laude graduate. At a dance in 1968, he met and married his soulmate, Joan Cronin. They were married on July 18, 1970 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Gates Mills, Ohio, by Bishop Raymond J. Gallagher. They remained happily married until the day of his death in 2012. Mr. Reagan worked as a high school English teacher, football, baseball and soccer coach at Hawthorne High School for over 30 years. He was also an athlete and an avid sports enthusiast. After retirement, Bud enjoyed singing in St. John Fisher choir under Grant Hungerford, writing and acting. He performed with his wife at the Norris, publishing songs like "Happiness Left Yesterday" by Gail Storm and sang and danced in "Fire Down Below" and "Star Trek". Although his family mourns the loss of their beloved father, they are grateful that he will be fully restored on the last day and is now resting in the arms of our Lord Father and Savior Jesus Christ. Visitation will be held Monday, September 17, 2012, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. with Rosary following at 7:00 p.m., both at McNerney's Mortuary, 570 W. 5th St., San Pedro. Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at St. John Fisher Catholic Church, Rancho Palos Verdes. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City. Dearest Joanie, my embrace and heartfelt sympathy. Met Bud at your wedding 42 years ago. But learned from you that he indeed was your soulmate. A blessing that you had each other for these many years. Be blessed and comforted by your son, your grandchildren, and many friends. Love, Stephanie Gordon

"Uncle" Bud was one of the most kindhearted people to grace the earth, and Auntie Joanie and he were so good together, on and off stage.

Bud was a caring and loving husband, father and grandfather and also to all he met throughout his life. He will be missed dearly but his soul will remain alive to all those that loved him. May he be resting peacefully in God's hands. He is home now and will always be wathcing and protecting over his loved ones

Bud was a wonderful father, grandfather and husband. He was a patient and gentle person with everyone. My favorite memory of him was watching him dance with his lovely wife, Joan, at the wedding of their son, Sean and our daughter, Trisha. They were the hit of the dance floor! Rest in peace, Bud. You will be sorely missed.

I remember Bud as the sincere, caring teacher who was always concerned about the students in his English classes. It was always a pleasure to work with him. He was a special man.

I have been most impressed by the devoted care and optimistic companionship of Mrs. Reagan over the past several years, which surely gave Mr. Reagan great comfort. May he rest in peace.

While attending HHS in 1974, Coach Bud gave me an opportunity to play on the JV baseball team. Thru that entire season Coach Bud mentored me, building my confidence and teaching me that there was more to any sport than just playing a position. Eventually I moved into coaching and again ran into Coach Bud, who once again freely offered his wisdom. Thanks Coach Bud, you sure made a mark on this young life. I know you're resting within your fields of dreams..

I knew Bud at Inglewood HS, when he was playing baseball. Then I ran into him again at Hawthorne High where I was running a career center. He brought his classes into the center every year. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by his family and friends. My thoughts are with you. I did see him once at the retired teachers luncheon. I have notified his HS friends, Jim Stewart (deceased) and Vince Benstead in the San Diego area. As a kid he lived near them, Jim was my best friend.
