Charles Lewis Bosdet, II
January 29, 1929 - September 17, 2012
Charles Lewis Bosdet, II, a South Bay artist, photographer, and community volunteer, passed away peacefully with family by his side Monday following a long illness. He was 83. An engineer by profession, Charles was highly valued for his technical and creative talents, driving work ethic, and ever-ready sense of humor. After retirement Charles became prolific in photography and painting with mixed media. He left his own mark in each field: In photography, he designed and patented a device for holding elongated camera lenses, a patent later cited by Nikon, Rollei and others. He also invented a unique art form that combined photography and miniature oil or acrylic paintings to create a bold, otherworldly image that was then transferred to canvas. The distinctive result pleased but often puzzled viewers, who could not decide whether the work was a painting or photograph. Earlier, while attending Imperial Valley College in Imperial County, he discovered a bed of shellfish fossils that proved the Gulf of California extended farther north some two million years later than scientists first thought. He enjoyed family, friends, writing, dancing and travel. He also enjoyed serving as a volunteer with his art associations, the Gardena Police Department, and Little Company of Mary Hospital, and Neighborhood Watch group. Charles was born in Zacatecas, Mexico to Charles and Sarah Bosdet, and elder brothers, George and John. When Charles was 7, the family moved to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He married Patricia M. J. Wallace in Winnipeg, Canada, and together they had three sons, Charles Lewis, III, and Gregory Henry (born in Winnipeg) and, after moving to Long Beach, California, Michael Steven. Charles and Patricia divorced after 26 years. Later, he met Rhoda Schultz in Redondo Beach. They married and lived in Redondo and the South Bay area for 30 years before she passed in 2006. Charles will be greatly missed by sons, Charles (Peggy Ann) of Nova Scotia, Canada; Gregory (Becky) of Long Beach; Michael (Alison) of Santa Clarita, and grandchildren, Nathan, Mitchell, and Ryan, as well as beloved family members in Canada and Mexico. He will also be missed by surviving brother, George Bosdet and by Betty Bosdet, widow of brother, John, both of Victoria, B.C., and their families. A private scattering of the ashes of Charles, Rhoda, and their beloved dog, Missy, will be performed off Redondo Beach. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the at www.alz.org.
