Charles Shuford Obituary
Charles Shuford

1924 - 2013

Charles Shuford, a beloved father and thoughtful gentleman, gently passed away on April 6, 2013 surrounded by his son and daughter. Charles Britten Shuford was born in Clarendon, Texas on February 4, 1924. His mother, Laverne, raised him as a single mother after the passing of her husband and Charles' father, Dr. I.R., when Charles was two months old. Charles was raised in a very poor household in Dallas, Texas during the Great Depression. Laverne raised Charles with strong moral and family values. As Charles said, "We were poor but proud." Out of necessity and commitment to his mother, Charles worked from the age of six in a variety of jobs. A man of many accomplishments, Charles earned his Bachelor of Science/Engineering (1948) and Master of Science with emphasis on aeronautical engineering degrees (1951) both from the University of Texas. He also earned his Juris Doctorate from Northrop University School of Law in 1982. After spending the majority of his career as an executive for aerospace companies, Charles finished his career in the investment business. A decorated war veteran, Charles valiantly fought in the War of Guadalcanal in 1942 during World War II for the US Marine Corp. He also served in special intelligence/strategy in two other wars and spent a considerable amount of time overseas on missions for the United States. Charles is fondly remembered as a contrarian thinker with a brilliant mind and a true intellectual who was deeply principled in his way of life. With a voracious appetite for knowledge, he exhaustively read about a variety of subjects and actively took computer and technology classes at El Camino College into his late 70s. Charles loved nature, the Redondo Beach Pier, attending plays, playing chess, watching tennis and spending time with his children. He is survived by his son, Charles Britten Shuford II, daughter Carol Ann Shuford and granddaughter, Uma Shuford Williams. As a father, Charles was the most thoughtful, caring and engaged father imaginable. He served as an exceptional role model and was always a kind gentleman. Charles and his son spoke nearly every day for 37 years.
