Donald Phoenix Obituary

Donald Eugene Phoenix, a Torrance resident for 85 years, passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2010, surrounded by his family. Born on October 28, 1924, Don was the son of the late Percy and Anne Phoenix of California. Don was a lifelong resident of Torrance and graduated Torrance High School. Don then joined the Navy and served his country in the South Pacific in WWII, and again in Korea. Don left his last ship, the LST Gordius, and the service 10 years later, in 1952. Don spent most of his career working for the State Department of Water Resources as a diver and then supervisor and, during that time, received the Governor Edmund G. Brown award for "improving the efficiency of State government". Don retired in 1986. After his retirement, Don's favorite hobbies were woodworking and gardening. He was often seen in his garage making furniture for his family, friends and neighbors or passing out fruit from his backyard trees and vegetable garden. He is survived, for now, by his devoted wife of nearly 43 years, Iris; his son, Don (Anya) Phoenix from Huntington Beach, and sons-in-law, Don (Nola) Nash and John (Danielle) Nash. He also leaves behind four cherished grandchildren: Shaelen, Shianne, Jake and Nicole; sister, Shirley Madsen (Spokane, Washington), and cousins Ruth (Santa Maria), Dorothy (Bakersfield) and Norma (Arroyo Grande). Don was truly a special person, great friend, true companion, loving parent, and someone who always took the time to make a person feel special. His devotion to his family and friends was life-long and will be forever cherished. He will be greatly missed. Visitation will be Thursday, October 14, 2010 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at the mortuary. Graveside services will be Friday, October 15, 2010 at 10:00am in Green Hills Memorial Park. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.

I will sorely miss our sessions solving the world's problems and sharing stories. The street will be very different without your presence and advice on certain things.
