Douglas W. Swartz

Doug Swartz passed away April 17, 2013 at the age of 90 in Canby, Oregon ending his struggle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born to Charles and Iva Swartz in Oneonta, New York where he graduated from high school as a football star. Doug joined the US Navy at the outbreak of WWII and served in the Pacific as a door gunner on PBY seaplanes. After returning home he attended Springfield College in Massachusetts where he obtained his Bachelors degree and married the love of his life, Ruth (Rodgers) Swartz. In 1955 Doug and Ruth moved their young family to Manhattan Beach where he was employed by the South Bay Union High School District for the remainder of his working career. During those years he also returned to college where he eventually earned a Masters and Doctorate degree. After retirement Doug and Ruth moved to Oregon to be near their daughters and grandchildren. Doug was a true academic, loving school whether teaching or attending. He also loved spending time with his wife and family and enjoyed traveling, golf and fishing. After the death of Ruth he married Caroline Ritter in 2003 in Canby, Oregon. Doug is survived by Caroline, four children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
