Elma Beck Obituary

Elma Beck passed away peacefully at her home in San Pedro, California on October 18, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by family and friends when she passed. Born Elma Catharine Keller on September 15, 1923 in Nanaimo, Canada, Elma attended elementary and high school in Canada. In 1945, she graduated with a degree in nursing from St. Paul School of Nursing and moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue her career. She met George Beck while attending pre-med classes at U.S.C., they were married on September 3, 1949, and they loved and supported each other over the next 61 years. George and Elma welcomed a son, Charlie in 1953 and a daughter, Megan in 1955. Elma decided her young family required a career change and in 1966 she received her bachelor's degree and teaching credential from Long Beach State University and she taught 5th grade for nineteen years at Ramona Elementary School in Bellflower, California. Years later, as adults, many of her former 5th graders contacted her to thank her for inspiring them when they were young. After their retirements, George and Elma traveled to destinations around the world enjoying, among other adventures, bike riding in China, Holland and England, hiking the Chilkoot Trail in Alaska, cruising in the Galapagos and painting (Elma) and golfing (George) in Ireland. Elma was a shining example of how to live life to the fullest. She took up downhill skiing at the age of 50 and could negotiate her way down all the runs at Mammoth Mountain. She began running at the age of 53 and went on to complete 10 Catalina Marathons. When she turned 70, Elma read an article on the importance of maintaining muscle as one ages and signed up the next day at a gym and religiously worked out with weights 4 times a week. Elma began to enter powerlifting competitions and, despite her slender frame, became a national champion in her age group. Elma still holds the American records in her weight class for bench press, squat and deadlift for ages 70-74. Elma was also an accomplished artist, whose paintings were on display in several South Bay area galleries and restaurants, most prominently at the Palos Verdes Art Center. She enjoyed painting landscapes and scenes of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and San Pedro Harbor but what Elma loved the most was painting her grandchildren in action. Elma was an extraordinary grandma to Brandi Scimone, Martin and Megan Beck (Anthony) and Carly, Quinn and Tess McElroy. Whether it was helping them with their homework, organizing an art craft, taking them for a walk to the tide pools, playing Monopoly, or reading them a bedtime story and singing a lullaby, Grandma was always there for her grandkids, with her special mix of
love, warmth, strength and wisdom. Despite her many accomplishments, Elma's greatest source of pride and happiness was her family. In the days and years ahead, we will always hear her voice and remember the wisdom and lessons she passed on to all of us. In addition to George, Charlie, Megan and her six grandchildren, Elma is survived by her daughter-in-law, Cindy Beck, son-in-law, John McElroy and her great-grandchild, Peyton Matzke. Because of her brave battle against cancer, Elma was able to hold, kiss and sing to Peyton during his first weeks of life. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Elma Beck's name to the Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits. Please go to Rice Mortuary's website, www.LAfuneral.com to send the family messages, share memories, or to obtain directions to the services.

Dear Megan,
Just heard of the passing of your mom. I know it was a few years ago now, but just wanted to pay my respects. Thought of you over the years. Homecoming and football games. Remember us carpooling in your bug to LBSU? Fun times.

Dear George, Megan, Charlie and family of Mrs. Beck,

I had the good fortune of being a student in Mrs. Beck's class at Ramona School in the 1967-1968 school year. I knew then that Mrs. Beck was a wonderful teacher, but I only realized how very extraordinary she was after my own children had been to elementary school. I particularly remember her large book cupboard; I think it would be impossible to complete a school year in her class and not love to read! Another favorite memory was her "manners" lessons in which she bought cartons of orange juice for each student, and we were taught proper etiquette. I remember attending square dancing classes after school with Mrs. Beck as our teacher. Mrs. Beck was the teacher in charge of the student council; it was so much fun to go to meetings because she was there. When it came time to go to Independence Hall at Knott's Berry Farm, Mrs. Beck came up with a plan in which the old PTA popcorn machine was dusted off and put back into service in order to raise enough money for admission to the park; I wonder now how much of her own money went into that project as well as the numerous cool and unique art projects that the other classes were not doing! I often thought about Mrs. Beck, and I contacted her in 2001. My cousins and I visited with her and George at their home, and at the art gallery where she explained techniques of painting to my son who was working on an assignment for a humanities class in high school. Mrs. Beck was patient and kind beyond comparison. For those of us who were blessed to have her as our 5th grade teacher, memories of her will live forever. Thank you for sharing her with us!

I had Mrs. Beck for my 5th. grade teacher in the early 70's. There was no other teacher like her from her haunted houses in the cafeteria to the "zoo" behind her classroom filled with rabbits, ducks, a pig named Claudia and even a goat named E.T. (eats trash). What other teacher would give you the keys to the classroom so you could feed the animals on weekends? We lived right down the street from the school and she entrusted her classroom and animals to our care. And we never let her down. My sister, cousin and I got in touch with her in 2001 and she invited us to her beautiful home. We had lunch and traded stories of "those days" and she even had pictures saved of us and many other students over the years that she taught. We still talk about all that we've learned from her and we still quote sayings that she said. May all her family draw comfort from the fact that she left a lasting legacy in all the students she taught over the years. She lives on in all of us. Rest in peace Mrs. Beck....you were loved by many.

We will miss seeing her on the trails of PV. We remember her marathons in Catalina. A very talented lady will be missed by many. Our condolences to George and her children.

Dear Beck Family,
What a wonderful person your wife and mother was, but of course you already know this. We were SO saddened to hear of her death.

I met Elma many years ago through Art to Grow On, she was a supporter and an artist herself. My husband later met her walking the trails with her dog and they got to talking. Joey and Elma talked at length about a painting he wanted her to do of 'his' surf spot! They walked trails, she took photos, then we went to her home to discuss the painting and to see her other works.

Through the years we have exchanged notes and Christmas cards. We have gone to her art shows at the PV Art Center. Our Elma Beck original holds a very special place in our home and hearts. We will truly miss her. We were so lucky to have met her.

There just aren't enough words to describe how special Elma, your wife, your Mother, your Mother and Sister-law, your grandmother and great-grand mother was. She was also a very special Aunt. I also speak on behalf of Her elder sister - my mother, and Uncle Hokey who had continued passing on the most amazing things about Auntie Elma for as long as a can remember.

Richard and I will always recall with a smile and a warm heart when Auntie Elma and Uncle George visited us in Rome, and their desire to ride bicyles round all those seven hills rather be chauferred around in a car.

Richard and I both appreciated the time a very busy Aunt took off to show us her, home, her art, the galleries and also to Uncle George, who didn't always feel his best and all of you could make the time over the last 9 years to visit with us during our times in LA.

We may not have had a chance to meet you all but we know how proud and how much she loved you all.
Family was first to Auntie Elma.

Our hearts go out to each and everyone of you.
