Harold Hallett Obituary

Harold George Hallett, an extraordinary husband, father and man, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2010, and took his rightful place in Heaven with all the other heroes from America's Greatest Generation. Born on July 15, 1920, Hal survived the Great Depression and began weaving a life of service to God, America, family and friends. Called to serve his country in WWII, Hal proudly fought the enemy as an electrician's mate submariner aboard the USS Peto, bravely patrolling the Pacific for months at a time and surviving a war many of his comrades didn't. After the war, his good fortune continued, allowing him to meet the gorgeous Margaret Van Wyk from Iowa, his eventual wife and mother of their six children. Hal earned his way, from telephone pole installer in the Southern California deserts to senior supervisor, with the Pacific Telephone Company during an incredibly successful 30+ year career. Devoted Catholic parents, Hal and Margaret ensured their children were raised with love, faith and uncommon understanding. When the family moved to San Pedro in the early 1960s, Hal and Margaret nurtured their children for success with Catholic educations, strong work ethic and an appreciation for family. Hal endured Margaret's untimely death in 1980. A paragon in the South Bay area, Hal has touched innumerable lives and is the consummate parental role model, neighbor and friend. Hal is survived by his four sons and two daughters, along with numerous sons/daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: son, William (granddaughter, Randie, grandson, Steven [wife, Tanya], great-granddaughters, Kylee and Zoey); son, Jack (daughter-in-law, Darlene); son, Robert (daughter-in-law, Suzette, grandson, Gregg, granddaughter, Jessica); son, Thomas (daughter-in-law, Janice, grandsons, Brian [wife, Jennifer], Kevin, Allen, granddaughter, Karen (husband, John Rangel); daughter, Mary; and daughter, Susan (son-in-law, Richard Catington, grandson, Brett, granddaughter, Lauren). The world is a lesser place with Hal's passing but Heaven is richer with our loss. A special thanks to the following for enriching, and most assuredly lengthening, Hal's twilight years: Dr. Steven Weinstein and staff, cardiology and internal medicine; Torrance Memorial Medical Center administration and staff; and the daily morning Circus Donuts Coffee Shop pals. Scheduled services include visitation at Green Hills Memorial Park Chapel from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, September 27, followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at the same location. A funeral Mass will be the following Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery thereafter. Dear Mary,
I was so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I know how difficult it is to lose a parent and how much harder it must be to lose the other one. May you be comforted and strengthened by fond memories of special moments during all the years that he was here. My prayers are with you and your family.

While I did not know Mr. Hallett, I do work with his daughter Susan, and by all indications, he and his wife did an excellent job of raising her. She is a pleasure to work with and I am saddened that she go through this. I know her faith, family and friends will help her and her family get through this.

Peace

Dear Hallett Family,
My deepest sympathy. Your Dad was a very special man and a wonderful father. Quiet but ever PRESENT in our young lives. He watched over all of us as if we were his own. I will never forget those long summer days playing ping-pong, pool, and practicing our gymnastic tricks on the front lawn, all under the watchful eye of Mr. Hallett. I pray he continues to watch over you and me from Heaven. I feel better knowing he is there.
God Bless You,
Maria (Iacono) Bradarich

To the Daughters, Sons, Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren and in-laws of the Harold Hallett family, I wish to convey my deepest sympathy on the loss of a winner. Yes, Hal was a winner. I met Hal in the 1960's. From that point on until his retirement in 1980, we held the same job title for Pacific Telephone. He was what I consider to be a true friend. When my wife Nancy passed on in 2007, Hal was the only person from my Telephone Co. past who attended her Memorial Service. Now for a special message to all of you. Don't dwell on any regrets. Dwell on all the happy times together which I'm sure far out-number the bad. Believe me, Hal would be extremely unhappy if he knew somebody dwelled on regrets. May God bless you.

Hal's flying our American flag on his front yard every day said it all. His hearty greeting was always welcome. And his calm recollection of being in America's submarine force in WW II on his boat the USS 'Peto,' SS-265, reminded all of us he was of our Greatest Generation. All Americans thank you Hal for your part in saving democracy and providing us the lives, the tomorrows we and our children do and will enjoy. Hal's spirit, his delight in life, his friendliness, his love of children, his work ethic and his humor live on as an example for all of us. Up there hope the donuts are free and the coffee great! Miss ya!

Dear Bill and Family, My deepest sympathies for the loss of your dad. You were very fortunate to have him so long and to share the joys of growing old to his ripe old age of 90. I fondly remember the Sunday dinners at your parents house, and shared the loss of your mother who so unfortunately died far too young. You can all be proud that you had all this time with your dad, who is now peacefully with your mom. Lynn Gruwell

Dear Hallett Family, I knew Your Dad pretty well and he will be missed. I go way back with him because my Dad and Mr H, went to high school together as Bob and I did. He always had a smile on his face and he was one positive guy. I had the pleasure in the last couple of years in walking with him at the Fermin Lasuen walk to raise money for the missions. Mr H kept a mean pace. What a great guy. I will missed him and his laugh very much. May he rest in peace.

What a great Dad ! I remember Mr. Hallett cheering Mary and the rest of us during our Mary Star HS games in the ol' Auditorium. He always had a smile and a positive word. I would see his smile years later while he walked Paseo Del Mar, especially during the Annual Fermin Lasuen Walk to benefit a mission in Mexico. When Bob & I attended the Saturday evening service at Ft. MacArthur Chapel, there was Mr. Hallett in the pew. So blessed to have known him. His children blessed him with devoted, unselfish service during his time of need. He was a treasure on earth ! Our prayers, Mary (Hobus) & Bob Arzuman

Dear Mary, Bill, Sue, Jack, Tom , & Bob-
We were saddened to hear of your Dad's recent passing. We had the pleasure of visiting with Uncle Hal and Bill during Christmastime in 2009. The love you all had for your Dad was evident and exemplary! It was obvious that your dad loved being in his home - and you all did all you could so that he would continue to live there. May God give you the joy that only He can give at this time of loss for you all. What a genuinely nice man your Dad was and is. With love, and in Christ,

Ron & Penny Barry
