Helen passed away peacefully at her home, two days after her 99th birthday. She was born to Jesse and Lida Pitney in Redondo Beach, CA, and lived her entire life in Redondo. Helen was a dedicated educator for over 50 years. She was a teacher in the Beverly Hills and Redondo Beach School districts, and the principal of Birney School. She was also instrumental in starting the early childhood education programs in the Redondo Beach area. She was strongly committed to fostering greater cultural understanding between the US and Mexico. This was exemplified by her role as one of the founders of the Sister City program connecting Redondo Beach to its partner city, La Paz, Mexico. After she retired, she took great joy in travel and square dancing, and she was deeply committed to her immediate and extended family. She was married to Elmer "Harry" Colwell, who preceded her in death. She had one daughter, Jacquelyn Church, who also predeceased her. She is survived by her son, Larry Colwell; her grandson, Tim Colwell; her granddaughters, Kathy Loghry and Barbara Church; 10 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren. Visiting will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, February 22nd at the Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary, 3801 Manchester Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90305. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 23rd at Journey South Bay Church, 2761 190th Street, Redondo Beach, CA 90278. Please sign the guest book at
