James Cox Obituary

James passed away peacefully on September 18, 2010. He was 90. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 38 years, Joan; his stepson, James B. Patterson; stepdaughter, Tori K. Patterson, her partner Helmi Hisserich; granddaughter, Madeline, and many cherished extended family and friends. He grew up on the Ohio River in Toronto, Ohio in a family that shared a deep appreciation of music. He sang in glee clubs, school operettas and church choirs. Jim served in the US Army Air Corps as a Navigator Bombardier in WWII. He earned a degree in Mathematics and English at USC in 1947 and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. In 1949 he earned a MBA from Harvard. He had a 36 year career with Bullocks Dept Stores as buyer, store manager and VP of Stores. Jim always had numerous civic involvement and had 30 years perfect attendance in Rotary. He was past President of the Harvard Club of OC. For many happy years he lived in Palos Verdes Estates. He served on the Board of The Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay and the Norris Theater and was editor of numerous bulletins and newsletters. He was a charter member of Bravo and long time member of The PV Breakfast Club. After moving to Fearrington Village, NC, he and Joan opened a fine gift, gourmet food and floral shop, Chape Hill Florist LTD. Jim will be remembered as kind and generous, a gentleman and a scholar with delightful sense of humor and wit. Memorial Service and Celebration of his life will be held at The Neighborhood Church, on October 29, 2010 at 1pm. Contributions may be made in his name to The Norris Theater Memorial Fund, 27570 Crossfield Rd. R.H.E. CA 90274. Joan Cox (928) 754-6104.
