James Peterson Obituary

June 6, 1947 - September 15, 2009
Jim passed away unexpectedly at his home in Long Beach September 15, 2009 at the age of 62. He was born in South Gate on June 6, 1947 and quickly moved to Lynwood with his parents, Harold and Beth and his brother, John. Jim graduated from Lynwood High School in 1965 and while there he began dating and ultimately marrying his high school sweetheart, Linda Wilson. Jim represented our country bravely during the Vietnam War and was awarded with 3 bronze stars for heroism during his stay there. Jim was an avid sports fisherman from the time he was a small boy and at the age of 12 began working as a deck-hand on several of the fishing boats that operated out of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach. Jim paid close attention to learn the trade and became skilled enough to purchase the Sportking in 1974. He ran this boat out of Ports O Call Sportsfishing in San Pedro. After much success, Jim purchased Ports O Call Sportsfishing in 1987, later named LA Harbor Sportsfishing. LA Harbor Sportsfishing is still successfully providing dockage for Sportsfishing, dive and tour boats. Jim is survived by his wife, Linda of 42 years; his loving children, Erica (John) White and Ryan (Heather); five grandchildren, Morgan, Lauren, Jackson, Bailey and Owen. Jim was a dear friend to many, beloved family man and known as Papa to not only his grandchildren but his employees and their children as well. Memorial service will be September 28th at 12pm at the San Pedro Fish Market, 1150 Nagoya Way, San Pedro, 90731.

We love you Papa and will miss you greatly!

I am saddened by the death of Jim. I knew Jim throughout elementary school, junior high, and high school. Unfortunately, I lost track of Jim after high school but I always knew he would be successful somewhere in the fishing business. Just this past August, while long range fishing on the Royal Star, Randy, Greg and I were talking about Jim, and what a positive influence he has had on the sportfishing industry. Everybody knew him and everybody liked him and we will all miss him.

I have not seen Jim for over 25 years, but he always impressed me with his skill and integrity. I met Jim while fishing on the Sport King being introduced by my dad and Johnny Putman, his deckhand. Jim always took care of Johnny who did not drive and walked or used the bus for transportation. Johnny was a simple man who many mis-understood but Jim treated him as an equal.
