Jane Donelson Obituary

Jane Moe Donelson passed away peacefully at home on October 8, her daughter at her side. She was 88 years old. Jane was born on December 1, 1921 in Los Angeles, just minutes after her twin brother, George Moe. Jane married her beloved Raymond Keith Donelson in 1941. They were longtime residents of Rancho Palos Verdes - 46 years in the family home. Keith preceded Jane, passing on July 18, 2002. Jane loved children, hers and everyone else's. She co-lead scouts, taught Sunday school to kindergarteners, she was president of PTA for years, and while president of Diana's Jr. Women's Club of Redondo Beach, she discovered a career devoted to enriching the lives of children in the poorest parts of LA County. The Dinah's arranged to have a toy loan started in the city's low income area. Jane volunteered to man the Redondo toy lending centers which lead to her supervising all centers and volunteers in LA County. Jane directed LA Toy Loan for 35 years, part of LA County Dept. of Social Services. Under Jane's leadership, LA Toy Loan was not only the oldest in the nation, but the largest and best run. She worked tirelessly into her 70s and retired only to volunteer her time and expertise an additional year. National Toy Loan Association honored her in 2006 by creating the Jane Donelson Recognition Award for excellence in service which is given to one recipient each year. After retirement, Jane devoted time to South Bay Auxillary to Children's Hospital. She held several board positions including president and worked weekly in their thrift shop. Jane is survived by her two children, Jan Arnold and her husband, Larry Arnold and son, Jim Donelson and his wife, Joan; four grandchildren, Jared Donelson, Joe Donelson, Jennifer (Loren) Peters and Jessica (Robby) Jackson; and two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Connor Peters. Momma/GG you are dearly missed!

I first met Jane when my daughter was a baby (29 years ago)..she talked me into being a "Toyrarian". I opened a store front known as "The Toy Library Club" full of TLC with alot of encouragement and support from Jane. I haven't seen Jane in years but she will always have a place in my heart. I was actually thinking about her the other day and wondering where she is now. What a surprise to see her obituary in the LA Times. I just want to say she is one of the "special" women of the world...giving, loving , the most industrious, enthusiastic and caring people I have ever had the honor of knowing. With sincere love.

As the former Director of the LA County DPSS Toy Loan Program, Jane was instrumental in promoting community awareness of the Toy Loan Program in Los Angeles County. Her passion for the Program and the children served was evident in all that she did.

Jane you were an inspiration to so many of us in Diana's. The Toy Loan Program in Redondo Beach was extremely successful all because of you.

Happy and always smiling . . . that's how I'll remember Jane. The Diana's will miss her. Will you have a memorial for her many friends?
